Born
before photography was commonplace, Kate never liked having her picture
taken and always refused to have a formal portrait made. This is the
only picture of her I have ever found, taken in her back yard in 1908.We
have little information about her life, but I do know that she grew
up on a farm in Bucks County, PA, and lived in the area for a number
of years after marriage.
The family moved to Columbia Ave. in Philadelphia
when her husband set up a dental practice there. She continued to live
there alone in her later years until she fell down the stairs and broke
her hip. The accident frightened her so much that she seldom went up
or down stairs again. She spent the rest of her life living with her
son, David, on Hazel Ave. in Philadelphia.
Kate
and David German are buried in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, considered
an architectural masterpiece, located in Bala Cynwyd, PA, across the
Schuylkill River from Philadelphia.
