David
was a dentist and, if family legend can be believed, part of the training
in those days was by correspondence school and this at the University
of Pennsylvania! He and my great grandmother lived in the Doylestown
area for some years before moving into Philadelphia. Their home was
on Columbia Avenue in Philadelphia.
My
dad said that regular trips to visit his grandparents in Philadelphia
were a mixed blessing. The most wonderful ice cream store in the world
was across the street but you also had to have a dental exam
and any fillings done during the visit. He said that the old, foot-operated
drill alone was enough to make you cringe, and maybe reconsider the
ice cream.
The
picture of David German (above) was taken from an oil painting which
hung for many years in the home of his grandson, Ronald Thomas German.
