Although
of an earlier generation than all other family members in this section,
Hasting was included because we have a photograph of him. We know only
a few pieces of verifiable information about his life.
Described
in later years by his daughter, Elizabeth, as a student and dreamer,
we also know that Hasting and his brother, Tyre, angered their father,
William. William's will states specifically that the 2 sons are to receive
the sum of no more than five dollars each because of their misconduct
to him. By the 1850s, he sold their remaining holdings in SC and moved the family to Georgia.
Hasting's
first wife, Susanna, died in Roswell County, GA, on July 11, 1854. Her
obituary in The Edgefield Advertiser indicated that the family
had moved from the Edgefield District to Georgia several years earlier.
Hasting married twice after Susanna's death. His second wife
was Nancy Anna Gwinn;
their children were Richard, Julia, John and Emma. The youngest son,
Thomas, was born to Hasting and his third wife, Sarah Elizabeth (maiden
name unknown).
The 1860 census shows Hasting living in LaFayette, Walker County, GA, with his second wife, their first child, and Tyre, his youngest child from his first marriage. His occupation was listed as lecturer. Hasting died in April, 1870.
I have not located his burial place, but it is almost certainly in or near LaFayette, GA.
