Maude
was a remarkable, strong, interesting, and highly intelligent woman.
She worked for some years before her marriage and kept a wonderful diary
of that period in her life, through her courtship by my grandfather
and, periodically, until the birth of my own father. It has preserved
a lovely picture of life in a small town during the early years of the
20th century.
She
raised three boys any one of whom could have been considered
a hellion, according to family stories worked with the family
seed business and specialized in gladiolas (see Harry
German for the answer to this!), trained as a florist and ran a floral shop in Smethport for some years.
Maude was very active in various church and civic groups, especially the
Eastern Star and the Daughters
of the American Revolution. During 1944 - 45, she was Worthy Grand Matron
of the Eastern Star Grand Chapter of Pennsylvania.
Her husband, Harry, died following a second stroke in 1949. Maude remained in their home for many years. Often, “the girls” would be invited from nearby towns to stay for a multi-day ongoing canasta game. Even in her 70s, her gardens were beautiful.
Maude
traveled widely, always bringing home fine stories and souvenirs, had
numerous friends, was active in the Eastern Star well into her 80s and
was an inspiration to her family, always.
