KITCHIN
Elias Kitchin; believed lived in or near Mill Hall, PA; born about 1775.

A family source said that he served in the Revolutionary War, enlisted Harrisburg, PA and mustered out Carlisle PA; no verification available of this information but this person (if the story is true) cannot have been Elias, based on his age. It might be about another relative, or a neighbor, or have been mixed up with another story altogether.

From Nov. 12, 1922, letter from Mary Jane Kitchin of Flemington, PA to Maude German:
“I will tell you all the information I can concerning your great-grandfather, which will be very little. His name was Elias Kitchin. He was born somewhere in the anthracite coal regions but at the time of his enlistment he lived somewhere near Mill Hall, PA, Clinton County. He enlisted at Harrisburg, PA, but was mustered out at Carlisle, PA. He returned home before he received his discharge papers. Some years later returned to Carlisle to receive those papers. He traveled with my father, Wallace Kitchin, as far as Mt. Patrick — there they parted company. Elias Kitchin never returned home. My father knew of only one man who was in conversation with him after that time but I do not know the name of that man.”

Elias Kitchin is believed to have married a Miss Elizabeth Phillips; father of John, Elizabeth, Peter, Wallace and:

Charles Kitchin; (b. November 5, 1813; d. Nov. 9, 1892); lived in Mill Hall, Farrandsville, North Bend and possibly other locations in Clinton County, PA; according to census data, he was a shoemaker

Husband - Charles Melvin Thomas (b. August 23, 1851; d. May 5, 1904) (see page on the Thomas family)

Note: The Kitchin family history during the mid-19th century was probably typical of many others an entire generation which nearly vanished due to infant mortality, death in childbirth, and the decimation of the Civil War. Pages from the family Bible tell the story:

Elias (b. July 20, 1836; d. January 29, 1837)
